- Thalassemia: Thalassemias are inherited blood disorders that result in abnormal hemoglobin. Males and females have similar rates of disease. Thalassemia syndromes are a heterogeneous group of single gene disorders, inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, prevalent in certain parts of the world. Thalassemia is one of the most challenging diseases being faced by the mankind with virtually no permanent cure. Every year approximately 100,000 children are born worldwide with thalassemia major, of which 10,000 are born in India.

Types of Thalassemia
Given the range of severities, some people require no treatment (those who are asymptomatic) while some people require regular blood transfusions for survival. People with severe thalassemia require medical treatment and the main treatment is usually a red blood cell transfusion.
Once a child is diagnosed to have thalassemia homozygous disorders, he/she has to take lifelong treatment. Management includes regular filtered packed red cell transfusions, chelation therapy for iron overload, management of complications of iron overload and transfusions, including osteoporosis, cardiac dysfunction, endocrine problems, Hepatitis B & C, HIV infection, CMV etc. However, this optimal treatment comes at a prohibitive cost. The cost of treatment of an average weight 4 yr old thalassemic child is around 1.70L–2L annually in a private set-up (proofs). Therefore, not more than 5–10% of thalassemic children born in India receive optimal treatment . World Health Organization has estimated that an annual average consumption of 27 units of blood and 8L worth of the drug are needed to manage each patient according to recommended standards. Infinity Organisation is now aimed to help the affected through blood and medicines. We raise funds for the same and spend them on the medicines of the patients who cannot afford but are in need. You can choose to donate blood, while we provide you the details of our campaigns when conducted, all done with your acceptance.
